Mark's Scenic Arizona

East Mountain (Pinal Peak) = June 27, 2009

This great workout in some wonderful mild weather

Led us through a landscape of charred trees and ash

Trail 214 is up that way
Trail 196 is just across the road
Looked like a tangle of snakes
Almost a surreal landscape of ash
Looks like the Manzanita will survive
A slingshot on the hill?
Zoomed in
View SE from first high point
Our destination, East Mountain
More results of the lightning caused fire
Another view of East Mountain
View out toward the San Carlos Apache Reservation
View SE from higher ground
More of San Carlos
View ENE
ENE zoomed in
Although colors are subdued, beauty was still evident
Rock pile surrounded by ash
Closeup of sling shot tree
Black shadows for trees
Elephant-sized rock out there
Rocks split by heat of fire
Broiled Manzanita
Tangled forms of Manzanita
Looked like plywood cactus from a distance
Extra roasted Manzanita
Fire just burned off the outer green layer
Another angle
More broiled Manzanita
Photo taken in shade
Same photo in direct sun
East Mountain
More Manzanita
And more
Denuded but quite alive Manzanita
Only subdued colors here
Another batch of snakes?
Wow, some green for a change!
Manzanita very much alive
Puffy clouds over Pinal Peak
Photo simply couldn't capture the brilliance
Family of little prickly guys
Century plant ready to bloom
Very representative of the trail
Pine in front of Pinal Peak
Trunk appeared to have been flattened
Manzanita rising from the ashes?
Some hot spots
Winding through the enchanted forest
Split rock in center
Fire must have followed sap up the tree
Charred pine skeleton
Another split rock
Rock doesn't look big from here
But it does from here
Another unknown butterfly
Alien tree giving painful birth?
Medusa tree?
More charred Manzanita
Brilliant color among the ahses
This frog blends in well
Turned around for a portrait
No luck naming this butterly either
Caught in mid-flap
We were in Bear Country!
White ash where heat was highest
Blackfeet! The ash sure did a number on them
