Mark's Scenic Arizona

Devil's Chasm = January 14, 2011

Hike is named appropriately... brutal, cold, treacherous, yet awesome!

A challenge to climb ~2500' through icy-crusted snowfields in sandals

We'll be hiking into the left canyon
Nice water flow for a start
First of the snow we'd see today
Our goal is past the spire on the left
First snow on the trail... not bad, YET!
More snow as we climbed
Heading up the chasm toward the huge boulder
Approaching the boulder to climb past
The path we came up
View from on top of the boulder
View east out of the canyon
Waterfall we must ascend past
Lower part of the waterfall
Looking down from above the falls
Another falls to climb past
We climbed the rocks to the right
More climbing
We climbed up the left here
The opposite side of the chasm from the ruins
Steadily gaining more altitude
Finally clear of the snow
First view of the Indian ruins on the cliff wall
Almost camouflaged into the wall
Very impressive construction!
In the entry area
This one was two stories tall
Overhang above the ruins
View out holes that held roof beams
View across the chasm
What's left of the floor of the 2nd story
View out the end...
Heading back down
Smaller ruin just below and right of center
Gabriele working her way down
One of the snowier areas
Our path brought us along the edges
Some of the ice we encountered
Frosting of ice
We'll be dropping all the way back down here
Looking back up
Almost back to the trailhead
