Mark's Scenic Arizona

Cochran Coke Ovens = March 9, 2011

25 mile round-trip drive out Battle Axe Road

Followed by about a 5 mile hike out and back

On the trail south from US 60
We will end up directly behind the peak in the center
The ovens are outside the photo to the left
View toward Gold Canyon/Apache Junction
View of the Superstition Mountains
Getting into the narrow part of the canyon
This is where we turned back
Getting a bit over our head here
If only I had a 3 inch lift kit & diff lockers...
This may have been an alternattive...
Harris Hawk
On Battle Ax Road from south of Superior
Looked like a satellite dish - see next photo
'Dish' is on left peak
Old windmill within 2 miles of the ovens
Old reservoir probably served by the windmill
Nice bar out in the Gila River bottomlands
See 2nd photo for view of the same formation
First glimpse of the coke ovens!
Double Peaks on right & South Butte
Barrel-chested barrel cactus
Nearing our destination
Same photo zoomed in
This was STEEP!
Is that old coke in the foreground?
Broken down shack
Almost there!
Coke ovens from behind
Buckthorn & pincushion growing out the top
Oven on the right was probably built later
Different materials used on this one
From inside
Ceiling
Inside wall
Last photo of the ovens
Part of an old structure near the ovens
Hmmm, look like 'The Mummy' missing an eye
We had to climb up left to bypass this
Our vehicle is 200 yards past the road in the center
This was easiest part, walking on flat smooth ground
Almost back to the car
